Rebecca & Kevin's Estate Shoys Wedding
On April 22nd 2017 I had the absolute pleasure of spending the day with Rebecca & Kevin, and their friends and family, as they wed.
A wedding so beautiful & touching it will be fondly remembered for many many years by those fortunate enough to have attended.
We’ve kept this little gem of an interview with the couple themselves, from a week after the wedding day, in a time capsule. To be revisited now on the day of their one year anniversary.
How did the two of you meet?
My dad is from St. Croix and Kevin grew up with relatives of mine. We met at their home while I was visiting for the holidays. We started dating shortly before my official move to St. Croix. Our absolute favorite thing to do together is travel. Traveling was a huge part of our lives individually before we even started dating, and has allowed us to grow and experience things as a couple through our relationship. We both allow each other to be individuals and embrace each other's personalities. We also love to spend time entertaining at our home and on our boat.
Tell me about the proposal <3
The proposal was a complete surprise for me. Kevin had designed the ring with his parent's over Thanksgiving and planned to propose on New Year's Eve. The ring actually landed in St. Croix on my birthday, the day after Christmas, and he couldn't wait. When Kevin got to the beach he asked me to go for a walk, which I thought was odd considering all our friends (and the party) were being left behind. No one paid attention as we went on our walk and at the end of the beach. He got down on one knee and popped the question in complete privacy. When we got back our friends, the birthday party turned into quite the celebration as we spent the day on the beach and ended the day with a boat trip to Buck Island.
What inspired your venue selection?
We wanted our wedding venue to capture the beauty of St. Croix and be close to our home on the east end of the island. The Buccaneer Beach House at Whistle Point allowed our ceremony to showcase just that with stunning views of the Caribbean Sea as well as Buck Island in the background. For our reception, we wanted something close to the ceremony venue & the beach but not in the sand. The pool at Villa Copa Caneel offered the perfect place to watch the sunset during cocktail hour and then we moved to the reception in the lawn of The King House for dinner and dancing.
There were so many stunning details, what was your favorite .. or favorites ;) ?
We loved the variation in venues which allowed guests to experience different sceneries throughout the evening. Events by Nichole made sure the decor at each venue was unique and fitting for the various spaces we were in.
The groom wore his father's wedding ring & grandfather's cuff links, the groomsmen all wore cuff links with the coordinates of Shoys Beach (where the reception was just off of) and the bride & bridesmaids wore custom handmade flower crowns by Ellis Originals from the Maid of Honor's store ADORN.
We also loved the detail that went into our (many) food stations displays by Blue Water Terrace that allowed our guests to try so many of our favorite things!
Planning weddings can be a juggling act. Do you have any tips for couples planning their weddings now?
Set an extra table just in case and keep your decor simple!
We also have a completely unedited version of our ceremony on video which will be watched and cherished for many years. The emotions and moments that were captured are so genuine and allow us to relive that beautiful ceremony as it was that day.
A First Look is a great idea, so you can enjoy the time after the ceremony with family and friends. As the day goes by quickly, you will want every moment with them. It also keeps things from feeling rushed as you'll want to get to the celebrations!
What are you both still laughing about?
We bought mini vintage Polaroid cameras to have through the week and the photos we enjoyed (and still enjoy!) looking at after the wedding week was over are absolutely priceless.
What feeling or moment is the most enduring of your wedding celebration?
Having our family and friends all together in St. Croix was absolutely amazing. We were truly surrounded by so much support and love. One of Kevin's gifts was a fireworks show at the end of the evening which was the perfect end to a magical day.
With such a bright future ahead, what are you most looking forward to right now?
Continuing to grow together and experience new things with the support of our families and friends.
